When Hannah Spearritt and Andrew-Lee Potts auditioned for roles in the ITV1 drama Primeval, they had no clue that they were about to meet their soulmate! However, in between fighting monsters on set, the couple fell in love and have been inseparable ever since, culminating in Andrew, 29, popping the question on a recent holiday to Majorca. ‘I knew I wanted to marry Hannah straight away,’ he says, while Hannah, 28, agrees that she knew she’d found the love of her life after meeting Andrew: ‘It’s always felt right and I’ve never doubted it.’The loved-up duo set up home after six months and now, three years on, live in a house in south-west London that they hope to fill with children: ‘We talk about kids quite a lot,’ says Andrew, adding: ‘We find it all very exciting. We’re not planning an immediate baby, but it is on the cards.’ Here OK! Talks exclusively to the happy couple about the drama leading up to Andrew’s proposal and their plans for the big day…
Congratulations, guys. Tell us about the proposal…
Andrew: I wanted Hannah to ask me at first. Last year was a leap year…
Hannah: That was never going to happen!
Andrew: I did it the old-fashioned way and asked her dad for permission. We all went out for a meal and when Hannah went to the loo, I asked really quickly. What was funny was that her dad was slightly drunk and he started winding me up when she came back, like he was going to say something!
Did you notice the mood had changed, Hannah?
No, I just thought they were getting on really well!
So when did you pop the question?
Hannah: We went to Majorca and stayed in a really cool hotel, it was really romantic. Andrew has these romantic tokens, percentages of love, that he was giving me throughout the holiday and which were building up to the question. We wanted to take a boat trip in the Med but it was cancelled as the weather made the sea choppy. Andrew was getting in a stress because he was really disappointed about the boat!
Andrew: Everyone at home knew that I was going to propose so obviously I was gutted when the boat was cancelled because of bad weather.
When Andrew presented you with the love tokens, did you suspect anything?
Hannah:Andrew’s very romantic. I love romance, we’re really sentimental. Things like that mean so much to me. So it wasn’t out of character.
So did you manage to pop the question on a boat in the end?
Andrew: The following day was the last day that I could propose and I really wanted to do it on a boat at sunset. But the boat didn’t turn up as it had broken down, so I thought I’d have to think of another plan because we were flying the next morning. Luckily they found a replacement boat, we got on board, cracked open the champagne and we were in the middle of the sea in no time while the sun was going down.
Hannah: Andrew chucked his camera to the skipper and then he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him! I said yes and started crying, as I wasn’t expecting it! But then a party boat came by with about 50 people on it with house music blaring- but we did have that moment.
How long had you been thinking of asking Hannah to marry you, Andrew?
Ages! I kind of knew I wanted to marry Hannah straight away but you think that you have to date for a little bit.
Hannah: For me, it’s always felt right and I’ve never doubted it. Even with obstacles that we’ve had to overcome, I always knew we would get through them and they’d make us stronger. I knew where we were heading. We’d spoken about marriage. I don’t think it was a surprise for Andrew that I said yes!
Were you nervous, Andrew?
I didn’t think I’d be nervous but suddenly you lose all confidence and think, what if it’s not what she wants? Up until then I was confident, but it came to the crunch and I thought, what if she says no? After Hannah said yes, and we were sitting on the boat sipping champagne, it was such a relief.
Did you have a ring with you?
Andrew: I thought about it and realised that I wanted Hannah and I to shop for the ring together. In Primeval I wear a ring on a piece of string around my neck as part of the costume. I’ve worn it from day one and as we fell in love on the show I thought I’d use that to ask her.
Hannah: I would’ve happily just worn that as my engagement ring, but he needed it for the show!
Andrew: Bless her, it meant a lot to her too and she was happy to wear it.
What are your plans for the actual day?
Hannah: We’d both love a church wedding in the summer next year, but we want something small and contained. Although I’m sure once we start it will get bigger and bigger, but we want to keep it as simple as possible.
You both have a quirky style; will there be hints of your theatrical side on the day?
Andrew: There’ll definitely be touches of it, whether it’s what we’re wearing, but not in a pretentious way, it’s just our style. To be honest, we don’t actually like that much fuss and attention.
Hannah: We just want the people that we invite to have a really good time. So we’re planning on having a live band.
What are you most looking forward to about the day?
Hannah: I’m looking forward to saying the vows as we’re going to write our own. And walking down the aisle with my dad- there’s so many things to look forward to!
Andrew: I’ve imagined how I’ll be when Hannah walks down the aisle and I look back at her. That moment of just thinking, this is it, and locking eyes with her.
What are your honeymoon plans?
Andrew: As a gift for the engagement, Hannah’s dad gave us a holiday to Disney World, this year, before the wedding. We’re the biggest kids and love all the rides, so we can’t wait.
Hannah: And at Christmas, Andrew’s parents gave us tickets to go on the Orient Express. We’re going to get all dressed up and go- I’ve bought a massive hat.
Do you think you’ll start a family soon?
Hannah: Yes! We want kids together, definitely.
Andrew: We talk about kids quite a lot; we find it all very exciting. We’re not planning an immediate baby, but it is on the cards.
Do you think you’ll have a big clan?
Hannah: Yes, definitely.
Andrew: I don’t know how many. Although Hannah keeps saying she wants loads, twins running around the house!
Hannah: I just know that I want kids at some point. I’m trying to grow up a bit at the moment. That’s why we’re going to Disney World first!
Andrew: Our house is like a kid’s paradise, it’s me and my lighting fetish, so it looks like Disneyland!
How do you cope with working and living together?
Hannah: We’re as crazy as each other and we keep each other sane. We both fundamentally want the same out of life and I think that helps.
You’ve been together for a few years, what do you do to keep your relationship fresh?
Hannah: We still go on dates. Date night is Thursday and we take it in turns to surprise each other- so last time we went to the theatre.
Is there anything that annoys you about each other?
Hannah: Yes, of course, but for every one I’ve got, he’s got one to cancel it out.
Andrew: It’s true, Hannah’s good at one thing and I’m good at another.
Hannah: He’s good with words and I’m good with numbers. We’re just two little halves…
Andrew: … that seem to fit together. We’re really good mates.
Hannah, will any of your old band mates be invited to the Wedding?
Jon will be there, but that'll probably be it.
Three of them have reformed. Would you let them perform at your wedding?
No, I think we like the idea of jazz more.
Andrew: Jason Flemyng, whos new to primeval, got married last year and him and wife did a dance routine to Ice Ice Baby. Id just be worried about being too drunk at that point to co-ordinate myself!
Hannah: I think it would be quite cool to do something funny like that. I want to do a whole set, loads of dance routines!
Andrew: It might be a bit much to design a musical around the wedding day!
