Real-life and on-screen couple Andrew-Lee Potts and Hannah Spearritt are back on the box for the fifth series of the time-travelling drama Primeval. The pair play techie wizard Connor Temple and zoologist Abby Maitland in the series, but off screen, they’re happily engaged and enjoying doing up their London home, which they share with their trusty King Charles Spaniel…
You’ve said that as Primeval progresses, there will be two camps — Abby with Matt and Connor with Philip?
Andrew-Lee Potts: Yes, every step of the way you can see that Abby and Connor are not comfortable with this level of secrecy because they’re so used to being honest with each other. Even if they don’t want it to, it just starts to unravel.
Hannah Spearritt: And while all the New Dawn stuff is going on with Connor and Philip, Matt is still on his mission, and suspicious of everybody.
Now, Helen Cutter… as far as we know, she’s missing, presumed dead?
Andrew Lee Potts & Hannah Spearritt: (laugh)
Andrew Lee Potts: Helen is dead. She died. But it is Primeval so… she might have done things before she died. We've have had clones before…
Interesting! Now what about stunts? There’s a pretty big one in the first episode…
Andrew Lee Potts: Yes. We blow up a building.
Hannah Spearritt: There are also lots of fights with creatures. It’s very much action-based as well as drama-based. We do a few lunges on set to warm up!
Were there any injuries?
Hannah Spearritt: Any incidents seem to happen when people were getting lunch, or slipping over on set when it was icy! Our make-up artist got stuck in her flat though. The door handle came off and she ended up locking herself in and the fire brigade had to come and get her out. I think she liked seeing firemen at 6am!
What’s it like for you being a real-life couple and working together?
Andrew-Lee Potts: We constantly talk about stuff to do with the house!
Hannah Spearritt: We lived Primeval for the whole of last year and it’s nice to escape to do other stuff too. But I’m so proud of the progress we've made in Primeval. The fact that we’ve both been involved from the start and that Connor and Abby still have life in them is great.
You own a house together and are engaged, but you’ve no plans to get married yet...
Hannah Spearritt: We’re so secure. We’ll get married one day but we’re having fun being engaged. And it’s so much money to spend out on just one day. Your wedding is brilliant, obviously, but it’s only one day. What an anti-climax. We want to get our bathroom done first!
Andrew-Lee Potts: Amazingly enough, we don’t like loads of people looking at us. I think we’re both quite shy in that sense. We do talk about whether we should just sneak off and do it and then have a party afterwards.
Hannah Spearritt: That would be quite nice, wouldn’t it? I just don’t want the stress of it all.
What can you tell us about the Primeval film?
Andrew-Lee Potts: The film is definitely happening and it’s being developed. The script has been written, but as for our involvement, it’s too early to say. It’s more of an American thing because the rights have been sold to Warner Brothers. It will be completely independent of the series.
Hannah, you were recently reunited with your former S Club 7 bandmates for Jon Lee’s performance in Jersey Boys. Would you consider reforming?
Hannah Spearritt: With things like this, I can only say, ‘Never say never.’ You change all the time but, as of today, no it’s not going to happen. I’m on a road that I’m excited about and I can’t see me getting off it at the moment.
Would you consider returning to musicals?
Hannah Spearritt: I really like singing so I wouldn’t necessarily say no to that. I’m not in a position where I’m wanting to close doors in any areas, so if the right role came up, I would definitely think about it because I love the whole shebang of singing and dancing.
Andrew, you were in Band Of Brothers. Would you and Hannah consider working in America?
Hannah Spearritt: We’ve toyed with the idea of going out there as a couple. It’s something that could potentially work. But it’s got to be the right time for us and depends on what we’re both working on individually.
Andrew-Lee Potts: I worked with a writer/director on Alice — a reimagining of Alice In Wonderland — and we may be looking into working with him again, as I’m also developing something ideas for our own show, which may be geared towards the American side of things. So, fingers crossed…
